No MMO home for the homesick?

I feel like a digital nomad. Travelling from game to game, I try to find that one chosen title that can harbor me for more than a dozen hours. There are so many fascinating places to go, but nowhere have I put up my tent for longer than just a little while. I see the sights, mingle with the locals and eventually even join one of their clubs, but before long, I’m packing my belongings, step on my imaginary motorcycle and ride down the digital highway. Where to? I don’t know, probably just the exit to the next promising game.

I mean, it’s not like I never had this digital home, a virtual world where I could put on a pixelated skin that felt like my own. Those six years I’ve spent in World of Warcraft will always be a part of my gaming resumé. No matter how much the game has changed, I will remember the days I called Azeroth my home away from home. I will never forget the adventures I experienced in the role of my Troll Shaman Akinya, and I will never stop feeling nostalgic about my first raid or epic loot. Sure, even during my peak time with WoW I had my moments of “struggle”. I was like a teenager who got fed up of his hometown, so occasionally, I packed my stuff and visited another place: Paragon City, New Eden, Tyria…you name ’em. But sooner or later, I got homesick and returned to Orgrimmar.

Today, this homesickness has long been replaced by an unrivaled wanderlust. I’m like a lonely gypsy, blazing my trail through the woods that connect a myriad of mystical worlds. One week, I’ll be killing zombies in The Secret World, while the next week, I’ll be back in RIFT defending Telara against the dimensional forces. The only constant in all of this is the fact that, sooner or later, I’ll leave again, driven by this urge to explore, while trying to find a new home.

Will I ever find it? I don’t know, but if I stop looking, I will never answer that question. So I wander, homesick for a place to call home. If you see me stopping by in your game, just give me some helpful advice and a few buffs. I’ll be gone in a few days anyway…

Why you should give RIFT a spin when it goes F2P

Over at GFN, I talked about the ins and outs of F2P games. After finishing the piece, I was far too eager to dive back into RIFT . I just couldn’t wait until June 12, so one thing lead to another and before I knew it, I was knee-deep in Telara and all its wonders. From day one, RIFT always felt like a pretty polished game to me. Though it follows many of the genre’s tropes, it’s a lot of fun to play. I hadn’t touched it in a while, so I was surprised by all the neat little additions. Trust me, there’s A LOT in RIFT these days, and soon, you can get it all for free. Free! Still not hyped? Alright, let me help you out!

Breaking the chains of factions

Earlier this week, Ghostcrawler (the well-known CM of WoW, acronyms ftw!) teased us with a very interesting tweet about adding an unannounced feature during Mists of Pandaria’s run. The entire community has been thinking and writing about this, and some of the ideas that have been proposed actually sound interesting. One thing that I haven’t read or heard yet, however, is a feature that had been discussed a while back, and that I would love to be inserted into the game: races not restricted to one faction.

You see, I can understand the idea behind implementing different factions in a multiplayer game. It’s cool to be part of a team, and having these teams compete against each other is something many players enjoy. But what I don’t get, from a rather logical point-of-view, is why membership of a faction should be limited to a handful of races, and why I shouldn’t be able to join forces with my enemy to take down a greater threat. It defies logic, and it also takes away some great storytelling opportunities. However, since Blizzard has given the Pandaren the possibility to join both factions, I wonder if the same thing shouldn’t be offered to all races, in a way identical to that of the fluffy bears: you finish your starting zone, and then you pick which faction you want to swear allegiance to. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Instead of just having you choose your faction freely, it would also be great to group with members of the oppossite faction for PvE content. RIFT has added this possibility shortly before launching its first expansion Storm Legion, and in The Secret World, the only thing you can’t do alongside other factions is PvP (which I guess is kinda logical). Cross-faction communication and gameplay would add an additional layer of gameplay, and I can already hear thousand roleplayers cry out in joy when they could finally talk with Orcs or Worgen.

Bottom line, thinking “in a box” is nice and well, and also important for any kind of PvP, but if Blizzard would join other titles in opening those boxes a bit, I would be more than pleased. I would even be so damn pleased that I would give them another expansion to implement player and / or guild housing. Seriously, Blizz, what’s keeping you from that?!
